Business Model#

What the company does and how it earns its money; written AI-editorially, exclusively from the company's original reports, without any assessment of our own.

Richemont is a Geneva-based international luxury goods group that designs, manufactures, and retails high-end jewellery, timepieces, and fashion and accessories through a diversified portfolio of Maisons. The Group operates through three business areas: Jewellery Maisons (led by Cartier and Van Cleef & Arpels, which together generated EUR 16.5 billion or approximately 74% of FY2026 Group sales at a 30.5% operating margin), Specialist Watchmakers (IWC Schaffhausen, Jaeger-LeCoultre, A. Lange & Sohne, and peers, contributing EUR 3.1 billion), and Other (fashion houses including Alaïa and Chloé, leather goods, accessories, and the Watchfinder pre-owned watch platform, contributing EUR 2.7 billion). Revenue is primarily earned through 1,393 directly operated boutiques in key global luxury destinations, accounting for 71% of Group sales in FY2026, with direct-to-client sales reaching 77% of the total; the remainder flows through wholesale and franchise channels. The Group's earnings are driven by brand exclusivity, craftsmanship heritage, and pricing power in the ultra-luxury segment, supported by vertical integration in manufacturing and a sustained strategic shift toward higher-margin retail distribution.

Current Status#

Summary of the most recent reporting period: core figures, drivers and management statements; written editorially from the current original report, every figure backed by a source number.

Group sales rose 20% at constant exchange rates to €6,300 million in Q1 FY2026, driven by strong local demand across all regions. Jewellery Maisons posted 24% sales growth, marking the seventh consecutive quarter of double-digit expansion, while Specialist Watchmakers delivered 8% growth representing a notable sequential improvement. Retail sales grew 24% at constant rates and accounted for 71% of Group sales, with online retail up 18%. Net cash strengthened to €9.1 billion as of 30 June 2026. 40
Management commentary on the FY2026 results (IR-Annual, 2026-05-22):
„In a geopolitical environment that remains volatile, the Group records strong growth in its sales and solid results, reflecting the resilience of its business model, the strength of its Maisons, and the constant agility and creativity of its teams, combined with a balanced geographical presence.“ – Johann Rupert, Président du Conseil d'administration 36 (translation – original on hover)

Revenue trend
Leverage
The Group's net cash position stood at €9.1 billion as of 30 June 2026. No net-debt/EBITDA ratio or gross debt figures are cited in the available inputs for this period. The balance reflects the Group's continued strong liquidity headroom at the close of the quarter. 40
Management view
The Group extended its strategic shift toward direct retail distribution, with retail channels accounting for 71% of Group sales and growing 24% at constant exchange rates in the quarter. Online retail expanded 18%, reinforcing the multi-channel direct-to-client approach. No raised guidance or other specific forward strategic announcements are cited in the available inputs for this quarter. 40
Change
The disposal of the Group's Avolta stake generated a €0.4 billion cash inflow during the quarter. Specialist Watchmakers recorded 8% sales growth, representing sequential improvement, though the division's growth rate trailed the 24% advance posted by Jewellery Maisons. No further one-off items or segment discontinuations are cited in the available inputs for this quarter. 40
Risks (current)
Retail stores remain heavily dependent on consumer travel, and a sustained decline in foot traffic could negatively impact sales and profitability; the Middle East conflict contributed to a significant drop in tourist spending during the quarter, partially offset by robust local demand. Volatile macroeconomic and geopolitical conditions are driving elevated raw material costs across the sector. The Gianvito Rossi CGU's recoverable value exceeded its carrying value by only €16 million, making the valuation sensitive to key assumption changes, and provisions for legal claims have been recognised, with outcomes not expected to result in material losses beyond amounts provided. 40 35

Revenue split by segment or product type, exactly as the company itself reports it. The basis is stated next to each value (3, 6 or 12 months); segment totals can deviate from group revenue (reconciliation/consolidation items). If the company changes its segment structure, older structures are kept in the expandable part. Rows in grey are no longer reported separately by the company; they show the last available figures and are never extrapolated.

Reported KPIs (as disclosed) (198)#

Figures the company discloses itself in addition to the standard financials; order intake, recurring revenue, user or unit counts, adjusted measures. These “story KPIs” usually slip through standard databases; here they are collected as reported, with no calculation of our own. Important: the definition comes from the company itself and can differ from firm to firm; period and source are stated next to every value.

Company-specific KPIs verbatim from the filings (English, as disclosed; not normalised). Balance-sheet and boilerplate items filtered.

In the first quarter of fiscal year 2027 (April–June 2026), Richemont Group sales rose 20% at constant exchange rates to €6.3 billion, supported by strong local demand across all regions 40. The Jewellery Maisons segment recorded 24% sales growth, marking the seventh consecutive quarter of double-digit growth and remaining the primary revenue driver 40. Specialist Watchmakers posted 8% sales growth, representing a notable sequential improvement within that division 40. Retail sales grew 24% at constant exchange rates, accounting for 71% of Group sales, with online retail up 18% 40. The net cash position strengthened to €9.1 billion as of 30 June 2026, partially reflecting a €0.4 billion cash inflow from the disposal of the Avolta stake 40.

FY2026

Richemont's FY2026 (April 2025 to March 2026) group sales grew 5% at actual exchange rates and 11% at constant rates to €22.4 billion, with growth recorded across all business areas, regions and distribution channels 38. Jewellery Maisons posted double-digit growth in each quarter of the year, reaching €16.5 billion in sales with a 30.5% operating margin, while Specialist Watchmakers returned to positive constant-rate growth in the second half following a challenging period 35. Full-year operating profit grew 23% at constant exchange rates to €4.5 billion, representing a 20.0% margin, although gross margin declined to 64.4% from 66.9% due to adverse foreign exchange movements, higher raw material costs, and additional US customs duties 35. Full-year profit increased 27% to €3.5 billion, partly reflecting the non-recurrence of the prior-year €1.0 billion YNAP write-down 37. The group completed the sale of YNAP to Mytheresa in April 2025 and announced in January 2026 the planned divestiture of Baume & Mercier to the Damiani Group, while maintaining a strong net cash position of €8.5 billion at year-end 35 37.

FY2025

In fiscal year 2025 (year ended 31 March 2025), Richemont group sales rose 4% to €21.4 billion, led by an 8% advance at Jewellery Maisons to €15.3 billion while Specialist Watchmakers contracted 13% due to persistent weakness in the China market 138 29. Operating profit declined 7% to €4.5 billion, compressing the operating margin 240 basis points to 20.9%, as higher raw material costs–notably gold–and unfavourable exchange rates were only partially offset by price increases 28 29. Profit for the year rose 17% to €2.75 billion, reflecting an improvement in net finance costs, after absorbing a €1.0 billion loss from discontinued YOOX NET-A-PORTER operations; profit from continuing operations edged down 1% to €3.8 billion 28 29. The group's net cash position strengthened to €8.3 billion, up €807 million year-on-year, supported by €4.4 billion of operating cash flow and free cash flow of €3.4 billion 138 28. Strategic milestones included Nicolas Bos's appointment as Group CEO on 1 June 2024, the Vhernier acquisition completed in September 2024, and the agreement to divest YOOX NET-A-PORTER to Mytheresa, which closed on 23 April 2025 with Richemont retaining a 33% stake in LuxExperience B.V. 24 28 29.

FY2024

Richemont recorded group sales from continuing operations of €20.6 billion in FY2024, an all-time high representing 3% growth at actual exchange rates and 8% at constant rates, driven by Jewellery Maisons advancing 6% to €14.2 billion and the directly-operated retail channel growing 5% to account for 69% of group sales 20. Operating profit from continuing operations declined 5% at actual exchange rates to €4.8 billion, with the reported operating margin contracting 190 basis points to 23.3%, as adverse currency movements masked 13% constant-rate operating profit growth 19. Specialist Watchmakers posted a 3% revenue decline to €3.8 billion and a 22% fall in operating result to a 15.2% margin, while YOOX NET-A-PORTER, classified as discontinued operations throughout the year, generated a €1.5 billion loss including a €1.3 billion non-cash write-down following termination of the planned sale to Farfetch and Symphony Global in December 2023 21. The net cash position strengthened by €0.9 billion to €7.4 billion, supported by €4.7 billion in operating cash flow and approximately €880 million in net proceeds from the exercise of shareholder loyalty warrants in November 2023 20. During the fiscal year Richemont completed the acquisition of a 70% stake in Gianvito Rossi, announced an agreement to acquire Italian jewellery Maison Vhernier, and appointed Nicolas Bos as Chief Executive Officer effective June 2024 20.

FY2023

Richemont's fiscal year 2023 (ending 31 March 2023) delivered record revenue from continuing operations of €19,953 million, up 19% at actual exchange rates and 14% at constant exchange rates, with all business areas and regions contributing to growth 10. Operating profit from continuing operations reached an all-time high of €5,031 million (+34%), lifting the operating margin 280 basis points to 25.2%, while gross margin expanded 200 basis points to 68.7%, driven by price increases, a favourable geographic sales mix and the continued shift toward the retail channel 10. The statutory net result was €313 million 138, held down by a €3,444 million non-cash write-down of YNAP net assets following a binding agreement to sell a controlling interest in YOOX NET-A-PORTER to Farfetch and Alabbar, with YNAP reclassified as a discontinued operation 10. Free cash flow amounted to €3,634 million and net cash strengthened 25% to €6,549 million at 31 March 2023, supporting a regular dividend of CHF 2.50 per 'A' share and a special dividend of CHF 1.00 per 'A' share 10 138.
