What the company does and how it earns its money; written AI-editorially, exclusively from the company's original reports, without any assessment of our own.

Koninklijke Ahold Delhaize N.V. is a multinational food retail and wholesale company operating supermarkets, convenience formats, and e-commerce platforms across the United States and Europe. In the U.S., the company runs banners including Food Lion, Stop & Shop, Giant Food, and Hannaford, while European operations are anchored by Albert Heijn in the Netherlands and Belgium, Delhaize in Belgium and Serbia, and the e-commerce platform bol.com. Revenue is generated primarily through the sale of food and non-food consumer goods via physical stores and online channels, with own-brand products comprising over 40% of the product mix at Group level. Supplementary income streams include wholesale and distribution activities in the U.S., and the bol.com platform generates marketplace revenue alongside its direct retail operations, with bol Payment Services B.V. holding a payment provider license to extend the platform into regulated financial services. The 2026 Delfood acquisition further broadens the group's European retail footprint, and a strategic option for a Burlington, North Carolina distribution center reflects intended expansion of U.S. supply chain capacity.

Guidance
For FY2026, the company guides EPS (GAAP) to mid- to high-single-digit growth at constant exchange rates (confirmed); CapEx to around €2.7 billion (confirmed); Operating margin to around 4% (confirmed). 19.
Profitability
Q2 2026 operating income was EUR 866 million and net income was EUR 526 million, with diluted EPS of EUR 0.60 147. Underlying operating margin was 3.9%, declining 0.1 percentage points at constant exchange rates due to higher energy costs and ongoing price investments, while diluted underlying EPS was EUR 0.63 19. Free cash flow for the period was EUR 1,116 million, with Q2-specific free cash flow improving 22.3% to EUR 632 million driven by higher operating cash flows 147 19.
Leverage
Net debt stood at EUR 1,665 million at the end of Q2 2026, against a cash position of EUR 3,196 million, with operating cash flow of EUR 1,743 million and capital expenditures of EUR 627 million for the period 147. The group successfully priced an EUR 800 million dual-tranche transaction comprising a EUR 300 million 2-year floating rate note and a EUR 500 million 8-year Green bond tranche, extending the group's debt maturity profile 19. Potential impact from financial debt levels and credit rating downgrades is noted as an ongoing financial risk factor for the group 19.
Management view
Management reconfirmed full-year 2026 guidance for an underlying operating margin of approximately 4%, with the outlook also targeting mid-to-high-single-digit growth in diluted EPS 19. Free cash flow guidance was maintained at a minimum of EUR 2.3 billion for the full year, reflecting management's confidence in cash generation through the remainder of 2026 19. These reconfirmed targets were communicated alongside Q2 results on August 5, 2026, without revision from prior guidance 19.
Change
Diluted underlying EPS decreased 1.4% at constant exchange rates to EUR 0.63 in Q2, reflecting modest operational headwinds across the group during the period 19. A Serbian governmental decree on grocery industry pricing negatively impacted regional performance within the European segment in the quarter 19. Egg price deflation and reduced SNAP benefits placed additional pressure on U.S. consumer demand, contributing to a challenging trading environment in the U.S. segment 19.
Risks (current)
The Inflation Reduction Act is expected to impact approximately USD 450 million in U.S. pharmacy sales, representing a company-specific regulatory headwind for the U.S. segment 19. Households remain value-conscious amid an uncertain macroeconomic environment, and antitrust and similar legislation compliance requirements create ongoing regulatory exposure across the group's markets 19. Unexpected outcomes in legal proceedings, nature and climate-related challenges, and the risk of financial debt impacts or credit rating downgrades represent additional risk factors for the group 19.
New this reporting period
The Delfood acquisition closed on February 2, 2026, expanding the group's European retail presence; the acquisition is expected to add over EUR 200 million in net sales to the European segment 19. Bol Payment Services B.V. obtained a payment provider license in 2026, extending the bol.com marketplace into regulated payment services 19. Ahold Delhaize acquired a strategic option to purchase a distribution center in Burlington, North Carolina under a 20-year lease agreement worth approximately USD 1 billion, with the facility planned for June 2027, while separately agreeing with Americold to terminate storage and handling contracts for facilities in Mountville, Pennsylvania, and Plainville, Connecticut, effective July 21, 2026 19.

Balance Sheet & Cash Flow (€m)#

Point-in-time balance sheet items (e.g. cash, financial debt) and cash flow items (operating cash flow, investments/capex) per fiscal year, half-year and quarter. Balance sheet values are as of the period end, flow items cover the period. Derived values are marked and are calculated, for example, as: net debt = financial debt − cash; free cash flow = operating cash flow − capex; the click popover shows formula and inputs. All values are extracted automatically from the filings; errors are possible; please verify decision-relevant figures yourself by clicking through to the linked original.

Revenue by Type (as of 2026-Q2 · EURm · 3/4)#

Revenue split by segment or product type, exactly as the company itself reports it. The basis is stated next to each value (3, 6 or 12 months); segment totals can deviate from group revenue (reconciliation/consolidation items). If the company changes its segment structure, older structures are kept in the expandable part. Rows in grey are no longer reported separately by the company; they show the last available figures and are never extrapolated.

Reported KPIs (as disclosed) (628)#

Figures the company discloses itself in addition to the standard financials; order intake, recurring revenue, user or unit counts, adjusted measures. These “story KPIs” usually slip through standard databases; here they are collected as reported, with no calculation of our own. Important: the definition comes from the company itself and can differ from firm to firm; period and source are stated next to every value.

Company-specific KPIs verbatim from the filings (English, as disclosed; not normalised). Balance-sheet and boilerplate items filtered.

Guidance Tracking (latest per metric/period · 9/20)#

All management forecasts (guidance) and their later outcome. Types: fiscal-year targets as well as quarterly/half-year targets; per metric and period the most recent statement applies, older versions can be expanded. The status is checked automatically against the actuals reported later: open (period still running), met, beaten, missed. For ranges (“X to Y”) reaching the range counts. Logged neutrally, no estimate of our own, no assessment.

FY2026

Ahold Delhaize reported net sales of €22,275 million in Q1 2026 and €23,165 million in Q2 2026, with comparable sales growth of approximately 2.0% at constant exchange rates in both quarters 18 19. The underlying operating margin held near the full-year target, reaching 4.0% in Q1 before edging down to 3.9% in Q2, with the decline attributed to higher energy costs and price investments rather than structural deterioration 18 19. U.S. online sales posted double-digit growth for the eighth and ninth consecutive quarters in Q1 and Q2 respectively, contributing to group online sales growth of 8.3% and 8.6% at constant rates 18 19. Delhaize completed the acquisition of Delfood in Q1, adding over 300 convenience stores to the European segment, and in Q2 the group secured a strategic option to purchase a distribution center in Burlington, North Carolina under a 20-year lease agreement valued at approximately USD 1 billion 18 19. Management reiterated full-year 2026 guidance for underlying operating margin around 4%, mid- to high-single-digit diluted EPS growth, and free cash flow of at least €2.3 billion following both quarterly results 18 19.

FY2025

Full-year 2025 net sales reached €92,352 million, up 3.4% on a reported basis and 5.9% at constant exchange rates, with the Profi acquisition (completed January 3, 2025) contributing €2,867 million to the total 20 14. Operating income increased to €3,542 million from €2,784 million in 2024, and net income rose 28.3% to €2,264 million, lifting diluted EPS to €2.50 from €1.89 20. The underlying operating margin held at approximately 4.0% for the full year in line with guidance, while free cash flow of €2.6 billion exceeded the guidance floor of at least €2.2 billion 14. Online sales grew 13.3% at constant exchange rates to €10,274 million for the full year, and e-commerce profitability was achieved on a fully allocated basis in H1 2025 14. A €1 billion share buyback was completed December 5, 2025, and a new €1 billion program commenced December 29, 2025, alongside a full-year dividend of €1.24 per share, up 6.0% 20.

FY2024

Ahold Delhaize reported FY 2024 net sales of €89,356 million, an increase of 0.7% (0.9% at constant exchange rates) from €88,734 million in 2023, with comparable sales growth excluding gasoline of 1.2% 12. Operating income declined to €2,784 million from €2,846 million in 2023 and net income fell 5.9% to €1,764 million from €1,874 million, while underlying operating income remained broadly stable and the underlying operating margin held at 4.0% 10 12. Free cash flow of €2.5 billion exceeded the full-year guidance of approximately €2.3 billion, and cash and cash equivalents grew to €6,169 million at year-end from €3,484 million at end of 2023 7 10. Portfolio reshaping during 2024 included completion of the Delhaize Belgium conversion of all 128 integrated stores to an affiliated model, closure of 32 underperforming Stop & Shop stores, and launch of the refreshed Growing Together strategy 10 12. The acquisition of Romanian omnichannel retailer Profi Rom Food SRL, expected to add approximately €3 billion in net sales to the Europe segment, closed on January 3, 2025 7.

FY2023

Ahold Delhaize's FY 2023 net sales grew 1.9% to €88,649 million, driven by comparable sales growth and inflation, partially offset by lower gasoline sales and unfavorable foreign exchange translation effects 5. The underlying operating margin declined 0.2 percentage points to 4.1%, reflecting higher operational and administrative expenses from inflation and labor disruptions at Delhaize Belgium 5. Net income decreased 26.4% to €1,874 million, reflecting impairment charges on FreshDirect assets and store assets related to the Delhaize Belgium transformation, as well as restructuring charges 5. Free cash flow of €2.4 billion was achieved at the higher end of the raised guidance range of €2.2–2.4 billion, supported by favorable operating cash flow and improved working capital management 3. During the year, Ahold Delhaize advanced the Delhaize Belgium transformation with 89 stores signed for conversion to an affiliate model, completed the divestiture of FreshDirect to Getir, and announced the planned acquisition of Romanian grocery retailer Profi for approximately €1.3 billion enterprise value 3 5.
